Frequently Asked Questions re: Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed

Below you’ll find answers to questions you may have about our Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed. Let us know if you have any other questions, we’d be happy to answer them.

Does Manitoba Milling Co. Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed need to be refrigerated?

Our proprietary milling process yields greater stability and shelf-life than other flaxseed products. The flaxseed does not need to be refrigerated. It maintains it’s quality, texture, and nutrient composition at room temperature.

Is this flaxseed whole or ground? What is the difference?

Our smooth whole-milled flaxseed is ground. Whole flaxseed offers a great source of flaxseed, however, in order to absorb the omega-3s, antioxidants, and protein, flaxseed must be consumed in the ground form.

What is the shelf-life after opening?

The shelf life is two years from the date of manufacturing, whether or not the package is opened.

Is your flaxseed organic and non-GMO?

Our flaxseed is non-GMO and guaranteed pesticide free. Although we offer organic flaxseed, this particular product is not organic.

Who should be eating flaxseed?

Flaxseed can benefit anyone! It is a good source of fiber, antioxidants, and omega-3s. It is a great addition to vegan, gluten free, and anti-inflammatory diets and may also be beneficial for heart health and digestive health. Learn more here.

Does heating the product destroy any nutritional value?

Research shows that ALA Omega-3s, lignans (phytoestrogens and antioxidants), as well as fiber are not not destroyed in baking or cooking.

Is there a difference between whole-milled and cold-milled processing?

Whole-milled flaxseed simply refers to the fact that the whole seed is milled so it contains 100% of the nutritional components of flaxseed.

Flaxseed meal is the byproduct of oil pressing and has had the oil removed and therefore does not contain any of the nutritious Omega 3 fatty acids.

“Cold milled” is an ambiguous term, unfortunately, and really just means that the seed isn’t heated up during the milling process. This is really not a point of differentiation because the nature of flaxseed requires that it be milled without added heat. Unfortunately, some companies try to use the term ‘cold milled’ as a point of differentiation which is misleading since it can’t be anything but!
